Peter Wong, former Chair of Action Sudbury, passed away on Saturday, June 6th, 1998. Peter died suddenly while attending the Federation of Canadian Municipalities meeting in Saskatchewan. He was 66
Peter was born in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan in 1931 & had a B.Sc. from the University of Denver. Peter was the first elected Regional Chair of Sudbury, the mayor of Sudbury for nine years, a Regional Councillor for nine years, on the Sudbury Board of Education for three terms, a Sudbury Hydro Commissioner for nine years, he was the City's Chief Engineer, Regional Director of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, Director of Ontario Good Roads Association, Vice-Chair of the Northern Heritage Fund Corporation, member of the Sudbury Regional Police Services Board, Vice-Chair of the Ontario Highway Transport Board, Secretary Treasurer of the Sudbury Blueberry Festival, President of Childhood-Enfance Breakfast Programs, Co-Chair of the Spring Food Drive, member of the Sudbury Regional Hospital Board, United Way Campaign Chair, President of Operation Lookout, Chair of Action Sudbury & involved with the initiation of the Ontario Community Council on Impaired Driving, O.C.C.I.D. Peter's widow, Lynn, is still actively involved with Action Sudbury. Peter was also involved with the initiation of the Ontario Community Council on Impaired Driving. Peter was an avid curler & represented Northern Ontario in the Labatt Brier in 1973. Peter has won numerous awards such has the Ministry of Transportation's Road Safety Achievement Award & the Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship Award. As the current Action Sudbury Chair, Ron Roy stated " Peter has left Action Sudbury both a legacy and a challenge, that challenge being to fulfill many of the initiatives he began".
