ACTION SUDBURY,  is proud to support and be part of OPERATION LOOKOUT!

LET'S LOOK AT THE FACTS:

In Ontario each year over 30,000 people are charged with impaired driving offences. That is one person every 17 1/2 minutes. Over 41,000 drivers licenses are currently under suspension as a result of impaired driving convictions.
What can you personally do to reduce these statistics, with Operation Lookout and you working together we can make a difference.

Drunk drivers cause more deaths, injuries and destruction than all murderers, rapists and robbers combined.
Every 4 hours someone is killed by an impaired driver.
Every twenty minutes someone falls victim to an impaired driver.
Every year 45% of all traffic collisions involve alcohol.

Impaired driving costs tens of millions of dollars each year in court costs, rehabilitation, lost earnings, health care and social programs.

Today; the problem manly lies with the hard core drinker, and repeat offender.

ENTER OPERATION LOOKOUTŪ

Operation Lookout is a Canada-wide, year-round public awareness program organized by Against Drunk Driving, that encourages the public and businesses to call police if they see an impaired driver.

Through community involvement, information posters are placed in community centres, donut shops, gas stations, and other places where it can be visibly seen. The information displayed on these posters provide the public with simple instructions on what to do if you see an impaired driver. CALL 911!

People who have car cell phones can best respond by reporting the suspected impaired driver as they follow behind the car, giving police detailed location information.

The program provides a strong deterrent to those who would normally drink and drive. More than just the police are looking for such drivers, the whole community is involved.

How To Spot An Impaired Driver:
Any suspicious driving behavior could be a sign of an impaired driver, for example:
bullet Driving unreasonably fast or at inconsistent speeds.
bullet Tailgating and changing lanes frequently at excessive speeds.
bullet Passing with insufficient clearance, excessive swerving when overtaking and immediately slowing down.
bullet "Overshooting" or disregarding traffic control signs or signals.
bullet Approaching signals or leaving intersections too quickly or very slowly.
bullet Driving at night without lights, or waiting to turn lights on when starting from a parked position.
bullet Driving in low gear for no apparent reason or repeatedly clashing gears.
bullet Driving with windows open in very cold weather.

Be Cautious if you see an Impaired Driver!
Always try to avoid creating a situation that is more dangerous than the one you are trying to prevent.

How To Report An Impaired Driver:

It is important for you to report the impaired driver to a local law enforcement agency as soon as you see them. "OPERATION LOOKOUTŪ" is a community based anti-drinking and driving program that provides you with this opportunity. By becoming involved, you are making the roads safer for everyone.

Many businesses in the community, such as gas stations, coffee shops and convenience stores are locations where impaired drivers may stop. As a responsible business, this gives you the opportunity to report this individual to the police. By becoming involved, you may save someone's life. It would be sad to think that you had the opportunity to save a life and you didn't.

Today, it is the hard core, repeat offender who is the problem driver. These drivers must learn that their behavior will not be tolerated in our community. Displaying the OPERATION LOOKOUTŪ poster in your place of business will go a long way towards changing the behavior and attitudes of those who still have not got the message.

Your local police service and the OPERATION LOOKOUTŪ committee challenges you to become involved, either as a Concerned Citizen or a a Business, or as a Corporate Sponsor.
